in the zone (VISUAL ART)

Instructors Paige LeDuc and Molly Brown

Mornings 9am - 12pm @ ArtWaves

Open to ages 8 to 14

Cost: $125 for the week

Have you ever found yourself so focused on your art that you zone out- or rather zone in- and the world melts away? Like reading a good book or cloud gazing, art can bring us to a sort of meditation and focus. Join us in an exploration of a variety of materials that inspire this feeling. From origami, to fiber arts, embroidery, painting, drawing, and more, this intensive has a bit of everything that is visual arts. We will focus our attention and time on the materials that interest the group, and each artist will have the freedom to spend their time on the projects that they wish. This is a great opportunity to freely explore some new skills with experienced instructors.

About Paige: Paige LeDuc is a local artist here on MDI who specializes in visual arts and crafts. A passion for the arts lead her to SFOA and SFOA led her to a love of teaching and working with children. Paige is currently getting her degree in childhood education at the University of Maine at Farmington.

About Molly: Molly Brown is an artist born and raised right here on MDI. She is a currently a Senior at UMaine Orono minoring in studio art and childhood development, and spent spring 2019 studying art abroad in Italy. She was once a camper here at SFOA, and is happy to come back and join the team as a teaching artist! Her specialties include drawing, painting, sculpture, and other visual arts.

The art of Self-Expression (Visual Art/Writing)

Instructor Sarah Domareki

Afternoons 12:30pm - 3:30pm @ ArtWaves

Open to ages 8 to 14

Cost: $125 for the week

In this Intensive, we will explore ourselves, our memories, and the world around us, through creative exploration and self-expression. Each day, students will be given guided exercises involving visual art, writing, or both. Then each student will develop an individual project in the medium/media of his or her choice; it can involve writing, visual arts, or both, making use of the space and materials ArtWaves has to offer. Students are also encouraged to keep a journal, a sketchbook, or both!

Note: Although there is a writing component to this Intensive, language disability is no obstacle in this class. If you have questions and concerns, please contact the instructor!

About Sarah: Sarah Domareki has loved art and writing from her young childhood. She has taught Art, Writing, and French to students of all ages, and is eager to share what she knows and loves with SFOA students! She also enjoys reading, music, theatre, and learning new things.

Shakespeare, Improv and Clowning (Theater)

Instructor Kathleen Lake

Mornings 9am - 12pm @ ArtWaves

Open to ages 8 to 14

Cost: $125 for the week

In this Intensive, we will explore theatricality through making big physical moves, creating bold characters, exploring onstage partnerships and group games. Exercises from improvisation and beginning acting will make it possible for even new performers to show their style in original scenes. Rhythm, imagining, repetition and practice will all play a part. Shakespeare's actors made sure their audiences were part of the show, just as modern comics do. Learn how you can capture your audience too!

About Kathleen: Kathleen Lake is a theatre professional and spoken word performer who has appeared in New York at The Mint Theatre and New Dramatists and in Maine at Portland Stage Company, Acadia Rep and Penobscot Theatre, among others. She is on the Maine Touring Artists Roster and has taught Shakespeare, comedy and acting around the country and locally at SFOA, The Grand, Mount Desert Island schools, Ellsworth schools and Island Montessori.

Theater Jazz (Dance)

Instructor Deanna Aguinaga-Whyte

Afternoons 12:30pm - 3:30pm @ ArtWaves

Open to ages 8 to 14

Cost: $125 for the week

Using a foundation of Ballet and Contemporary techniques we will infuse our movement with popular and theatrical styles. This theater jazz will approach movement as mindful and motivated by presence. There will be an incorporation of strength, flexibility, stamina and stability in every days warm up using Ballet, Yoga, and Dance Fitness exercises. We will learn about objectives within choreography and implement it, therefore becoming actors as well as dancers. It is a goal to also learn Original Broadway Choreography to share with friends and family at the end of the session.

About Deanna: Deanna Aguinaga-Whyte has been performing professionally since the age of 10. She has been in the Cast of the Broadway Revivals A Chorus Line and West Side Story. Performing in Mamma Mia on Broadway she met her Husband Blake. Their greatest adventure is their daughter Kya. After touring the country with Wicked the Musical for a year and a half she is grateful to be on the Island with her family.
